Kyle Hughes, known to many as Mr. Lego, has been invited to appear on the Canadian LEGO club competition show, Brickmasters, filming on Aug. 17 and 18 in Regina.
“I am excited about the opportunity but am also very interested in experiencing all that goes on through the production and backstage,” commented Hughes.
Hughes received his invitation to participate in season 2 of the show in June.
He has been paired with a fellow Lego enthusiast, Roy Jacobs, out of Regina, to work as a team on the TV show.
In the show, each team is supplied with LEGO kits and they have to create something new with the building blocks from their kits.
These creations are referred to as a MOC (My Own Creation). The email invitation advised that filming will take place from 8 am to 4 pm on the first day.
Hughes and Jacob belong to the Saskatchewan LEGO club, known as SLUG. There are Alberta LEGO clubs that adults who are interested in LEGO can join. LEGO has made adult-focused LEGO kits available for purchase.
People from all ages and all walks of life from all over the world have LEGO hobbies.
The Barrhead Public Library LEGO program happens Wednesdays at 3:30 pm so kids can attend after school. It is a successful program that offers ongoing projects for kids to contribute to and individual skill-building challenges.
Hughes has built a Harry Potter-themed MOC made out of three different 25th-anniversary kits and is on display at the Barrhead library.
The LEGO club built a Mario figure that stands over two feet tall.
Hughes broke down the plans for the group, and the kids started at the bottom with Mario’s shoes and built layer after layer of LEGO blocks to create this complex figure.
LEGO is the largest toy company in the world, having surpassed Mattel in 2015. LEGO is not a children’s toy anymore with LEGO movies, LEGOland in Florida and LEGO clubs for adults around the globe.
LEGO hosts its own competition with the 2024 event in Australia with four Australian teams and four international teams.
Hughes had an opportunity to go to the LEGO international competition, but COVID hit, and they cancelled international players from travelling but he can apply to be considered again.
Hughes is the tech support person at the Barrhead Library. He runs the LEGO program at the Barrhead Library and has become a LEGO artist. Hughes earned his nickname after two children who could not pronounce his name started calling him Mr. Lego and it has stuck over the years.
