CANMORE – An art legacy is looking to live on at the Canmore Art Guild (CAG) with decades of paintings from Canmore’s Alice Saltiel.
Saltiel passed away in 2019 and left behind hundreds of works of art. With her family having their own personal collections on their walls, they are looking to spread the joy of her work through an art show and sale at the CAG gallery in Elevation Place.
“We want them to be viewed and to be enjoyed, and to keep her legacy going,” said Denise Scammell, Saltiel’s eldest daughter.
An opening reception will be held on Friday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. with Saltiel’s family to celebrate her life as an artist. The show will remain open until Sept. 29.
“We're going to be there to visit with people and chat with people about the artwork and kind of have a bit of a little bit of a celebration,” said Scammell.
Saltiel spent a large part of her life painting mountain scenes, animals and still life, among others, and exhibiting them in Canmore, Banff, Jasper, Vancouver and Calgary.
Living in Canmore, she would venture with her husband, who was a park ranger, or artist friend group to picturesque places and paint the landscapes in front of them.
“Her and her other artist friends would go out into, stay at some of the backcountry huts and paint outside, and they really enjoy doing that,” said Scammell.
To name a few, Saltiel painted and sold prints of the iconic views of Mount Assiniboine, Mount Rundle and Three Sisters.
“The prints of some of her watercolour paintings, like Mount Rundle, the Three Sisters, kind of the big mountains in the area that are familiar to everyone, those things did really well, and people really liked them,” said Scammell.
Along with watercolour, Saltiel work in other mediums including oil, pencil drawings, photo lithographs and serigraphs.
