Home to more than 114,000 Metis people, Alberta has the largest such population in Western Canada. The province also has land set aside for Metis people--eight Metis Settlements across 1.25 million acres.
To recognize Metis Week, Indigenous Relations Minister Rick Wilson invites Albertans to explore the vibrant Metis culture and celebrate the unique and valued contributions Metis people make in the province.
"The proud and strong spirit of Métis people will shine brightly across Alberta during Métis Week. I encourage all Albertans to join this celebration of culture, language, history, and the contributions of the Métis people of Alberta," he said. "Every year, we also commemorate the memory of the great Metis leader Louis Riel, a champion of Metis rights on Nov. 16, the anniversary of his hanging."
The Metis Nation of Alberta is sharing digital videos, presentations, and memorials throughout the week. Celebrate Métis Week from the comfort of your home and share the pride and culture with your friends and family, Métis or not. Highlights include jigging tutorials, storytelling, fingerweaving demo, a screening of Riel's Honour and Michif lessons (the language of the Metis).
