An incident potentially fueled by road rage sent two drivers to hospital Monday (Jan. 3) with one of those drivers possibly facing charges.
Lake Louise RCMP responded to a call from a westbound male driver in a white Pontiac Sunbird on the Trans-Canada Highway at 10 p.m., to report the driver of a black Toyota pickup truck closely following the Pontiac while swerving back-and-forth on the highway between Banff and Lake Louise.
The driver of the Pontiac called 911 when the truck attempted to ram him, according to a release provided by Cpl. J.S. Campbell of the Lake Louise RCMP.
Approximately five kilometres east of Lake Louise the driver of the truck slammed into the back of the Pontiac, causing both vehicles to lose control and hit the concrete median in the centre of the highway.
After the Toyota truck landed on top of the Pontiac, the driver fled, jumping down a 20-foot embankment.
Police arrived and arrested the man who surrendered before K9 units with the RCMP and Parks Canada were needed to track the man.
Lake Louise Fire and EMS services attended the scene and both parties where transported to the Banff hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the driver of the black Toyota truck.
The RCMP are asking the driver of a tractor-trailer that was following the two vehicles to contact the nearest RCMP so investigators can interview him as to what he witnessed.
