Devon, located just 15 minutes west of Edmonton, is a hidden gem. It’s not known as a main tourist attraction, yet it has all the features of one. A visit to Devon is a visit to a quiet, quaint, beautiful place with a lot of fun, affordable family activities. Let’s explore a few of them.

Nestled on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, Devon offers a plethora of outdoor activities that include hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and boating. With 24 kilometres of natural and paved trails, a scenic river valley, and a full boat launch, there are plenty of nature-filled spaces to explore.

After a day outdoors, you’ll crave some refreshment. This is a great time check out Devon’s unique eateries such as Frickin’ Delights Donuts, where vegans and non-vegans alike love the hand made donuts, craft coffee, and tea. A variety of other restaurants represent cuisine from around the world. House of Goody’s, Norma Dee’s Kitchen, and Superior Fish & Chips are just some of the places to dine, in addition to chain favourites likes A&W and Boston Pizza. Check each restaurant’s website to see if they offer dine in or take out during this time.

Golfers can test their skills at the Devon Golf Course and Country Club. Campers can enjoy the amenities at the Devon Lions Campground. Everyone is welcome at the Farmer’s Market, which is held Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the community center. Some events and attractions are closed due to the pandemic, but the Town of Devon has other exciting activities in the works, such as a downtown community market. Stay tuned to the Devon & District Chamber of Commerce’s website for upcoming details.

Devon is a great place for a family day out and camping, and it’s also a wonderful place for small business owners to network. Why not join the Zoom B2B networking event on August 13 or September 10 to connect with other entrepreneurs and learn how they are remaining operational during this time of social distancing? Or, check out some of the shops like Mainstreet Mud where you’ll find beautiful works of pottery, or Shift Happens where you can get your bike repaired or tuned up before you hit those beautiful trails.

No visit to Devon is complete without a visit to Voyageur Park, the home of the Devon River Valley Trail. This is an easy-moderately difficult (stairs) trail that takes up to an hour to complete. Along the way you will pause to take breathtaking photos, enjoy your on-leash dog’s excitement at the birds and squirrels, or test your will against the Legs of Fire stairs that give you an 86 metre climb.

Devon is a great place for a day trip or overnight camping excursion this summer. Many attractions around Alberta are closed right now, but nature is always open. The great outdoors, along with local shops and restaurants where the owners are committed to safety and sanitation, allow us to enjoy the summer with friends and family. Devon has all this – and more. Please practice social distancing while visiting Devon and wear a mask in the places of business that request you to do so.
