LAKE LOUISE – Alberta RCMP had a busy long weekend as more than 1,900 drivers were dinged with speeding tickets, including a motorist near Lake Louise caught going over 150 kilometres per hour.

The driver was stopped near Lake Louise on Aug. 2 for travelling a speed of 152 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

“A toddler in the vehicle was also found to be improperly secured in a five-point harness car seat. Officers educated the driver on the proper five-point harness fastening,” wrote Cst. Michael Hibbs in a press release.

The motorist was one of 10 across the province charged over the long weekend with travelling at excessive speeds.

Under the Traffic Safety Act, excessive speed is when a motorist is speeding more than 50 km/h over the limit. Drivers travelling at this speed are subject to a mandatory court appearance where they can face high fines or licence suspensions.

Alberta RCMP said this year officers recorded 26 per cent more roadway offences compared to the August long weekend last year.

“RCMP issued a total of 2,559 traffic tickets, and 420 warnings across the province … Thanks to the work of RCMP this past weekend, Albertans were able to safely celebrate the summer holiday both on and off the roads,” wrote Hibbs.
