Here are five things to try this summer.
- Take a Hike
The regional trail system extends through Strathcona County where much of the 22 kilometre segment borders the North Saskatchewan River. Whether you choose to walk, run, hike, or meander, you’ll have a day of nature-filled exploration on the Strathcona County Regional Trail.
- Visit a Recreation Center
Strathcona County’s recreational facilities are re-opening during July. While some features (such as some pools and indoor playgrounds) remain closed until fall or later, indoor tracks and fitness rooms are opening up. Social distancing, pre-booking, and other measures are in place to ensure the safety of staff and guests.
- Food Truck Fridays
Miss eating out? Food Truck Fridays are the perfect solution! From 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Fridays until August 21, you can enjoy dining outdoors among a choice of the best food trucks in town. Food Truck Fridays takes place in the parking lot of the Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion. The variety of treats ensures you can always find something new and delicious to try.
- Farmer’s Market
Farmer’s Markets make great family outings. Show the kids how to make a meal from farm to table. Find unique wares from local artisans. Pick up your new favourite bottle of locally made wine or beer. With several markets in Strathcona County, there is one near you. This summer visit them all! Be sure to include Sherwood Park, Baseline, Salisbury, and Old Strathcona.
- Get Inspired
Strathcona County has a large arts and culture scene which incudes galleries, libraries, museums and archives. Be moved by artwork, discover a new genre to read, and learn about how our past inspires our future. There are many ways to get inspired this summer with all the cultural facilities across the County.
- Shop Local
Alberta is home to thousands of entrepreneurs, and you’ll find a good many of them in Strathcona County. Local businesses take the time to invest in the community and bring you shops and services that can be difficult to find anywhere else. From quaint coffee shops and restaurant to boutique retail for clothing and home goods, spend this summer rediscovering your love of shopping local.
When frequenting these and other locations in Strathcona County this summer, please practice social distancing, hand washing/sanitizing, and wear a mask in the establishments that request you to do so. These simple actions help everyone, including the most vulnerable among us, be able to safely enjoy the many activities available across the County. Canadians have worked very hard to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the pandemic; it is everyone’s responsibility to look out for themselves and each other during these unprecedented times. By working together, we can look forward to coming back together in meaningful ways.
COVID-19 has changed the way we shop, work, and travel but it has also opened up great opportunities to re-discover what our local communities have to offer. Staycations are fun, family-friendly and rewarding. With so many things to do, see, and experience in Strathcona County, you have plenty to explore all summer, and all year, long.
