CANMORE – Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada is coming to the Rockies when Canmore, Alberta, hosts the hockey celebration on January 18, 2025.
Ron MacLean announced Canmore will host the 25th anniversary of the event on Sportsnet during Game 3 of the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars western conference finals on Monday (May 27).
The Hockey Day in Canada broadcast features special programming and stories from across the nation throughout the day, with all seven Canadian NHL teams in action in the evening.
It’s the first time the event visits Alberta since 2014 when Lloydminster hosted and it's only the third time being held in the province since 2000.
In-town activities in Canmore, located about 90 kilometres west of Calgary, are yet to be announced. Hockey Day in Canada has worked with local junior hockey and minor hockey associations previously. Last year, Victoria, B.C. hosted and its junior hockey team, the Royals, played a game for the event.
The Outlook will update when more information becomes available.
The mountain town has a storied history with the winter sport, including Canmore-born and former NHL player Alex Kaleta being credited with coining the Hat Trick phrase, for whenever one player scores three goals.
In the late 1990s, Hollywood came to Canmore to film the underdog hockey movie Mystery, Alaska, starring Russell Crowe and Burt Reynolds.
