Chartered Accountant Natalie Kelly has the knowledge and know-how to help her clients adjust to upcoming federal changes to small business taxes.

With the federal government proposing new taxation rules, she has been proactive in educating herself about the proposals. Kelly, CPA, CA, is involved in the tax community and with fellow tax specialists, and is participating in the three-year, In-Depth Tax Program through Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada.

“It’s definitely an area I’m very well versed in,” said Kelly.

Kelly is in the ninth year with her own practice and, with her six office staff, can offer expertise and help in a number of areas.

“I specialize in tax and small business,” she said, adding her client base includes many other kinds of clients, such as people from out of town who own local rental property, clients who own vacation rental properties and local charities.

Her services extend beyond tax, and she can help businesses and individuals with everything from learning about cloud software to offering bookkeeping coaching as a QuickBooks ProAdviser to developing accounting processes or business consulting.

Kelly completed her Chartered Accountant Articling and received her designation in 2001 after achieving an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree. She articled in the Calgary and New Zealand offices of international firm KPMG.

After completing her training, she opted to go into a career as a consultant, working with mostly public companies in the area of accounting and taxation. Over the years, she has worked internationally in New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea.

She eventually decided to limit her travels and worked for two years at the Banff Centre as Associate Director of Planning, a financial role.

She’s lived in Canmore since 2001, moving here to pursue her love of outdoor recreational pursuits like climbing and hiking. Later she started kayaking because she missed the water, and now is a brand ambassador and a pilot for Trak Kayaks.

“I really wanted to stay in the community, but I also wanted to start my own business, so nine years ago I decided to start my own practice,” she said.

It’s rewarding to work in a community with so many interesting people, often becoming part of a team of professionals that support a business. Thanks to working in a smaller town, she can often collaborates with the bankers and lawyers who also work with her clients.

“The part that I really love about my job is working in a small community that has a lot of entrepreneurs,” she said.

She also shares a love of many outdoor sports with many of her clients, which gives them a common ground to help build a relationship.

Kelly is volunteering as a course crew member for the upcoming Lake Louise Audi FIS Ski World Cup. Other volunteer experience includes founding the local Mountain Mumblers Toastmasters Club, coaching a small business owner as part of the Community Futures Centre West small business development program, and work with Junior Achievement.

She keeps an open door policy and is very accessible to her clients. Walking into a big firm, usually you can’t see a partner right away – but you can usually see Kelly, who loves the flexibility offered by owning her own business.

Ultimately, clients choose Kelly thanks to her ability to provide a wide-range of services and expertise, and her devotion to keeping herself up-to-date on things that might impact her clients, like the proposed tax changes.

“I’m proactive and progressive in the areas for small business. When new small business opportunities are coming up, whether it’s technology or tax proposals, I’m always very current,” she said.
