This stunning and serene destination is a paradise waiting to be discovered, offering a unique escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.
Tucked away in Central Alberta, just outside of a small hamlet called Ashmont, in a gorgeously wooded area, you’ll find one of the province's most beautiful beaches. The sprawling, sandy beach is perfect for paddle boarding, swimming, relaxing, and enjoying an unforgettable day with family or friends. That beach? Floating Stone Lake day-use area.
Floating Stone Lake
Nestled within St. Paul County, Floating Stone Lake is a massive beach with white sand and an endlessly inviting shallow water swimming area. There’s a boat launch, fishing docks, a playground, hiking and walking trails nearby, and tons of amazing real estate for making sandcastles. While Alberta is home to a ton of beautiful beaches, there aren’t many that offer the typical sandy beach atmosphere. Here in Alberta, we’re used to rocky shores, fast-flowing rivers, and ice-cold glacier-fed lakes. So, you can imagine why this hidden gem is so beloved by all of it's visitors.
The day-use area offers an opportunity for anyone to visit, equipped with benches, picnic areas, a pristine park, and so much more. If you’re in need of a little adventure, but you still want to relax, discovering a new beach and leaning into the zen of the area is just what the doctor ordered.
If you’re wondering why it’s called “Floating Stone,” this is because of a massive, solitary rock that used to rise up from under the water when the levels receded. The magnificent sight caught the attention of visitors and earned this lake its name.
Camping In the Area
Now, let’s talk about the campground. It’s a shame to spend only a day at such an enchanting location, so why not turn your adventure into a full-on holiday? Just 30 minutes northwest of St. Paul, you’ll find Floating Stone Lake Campground. There are 65 campsites in total, 19 of which are without power. While there isn’t a designated tenting area, tents can be pitched within each campsite at the regular site rental rate. There’s a dumping station and sewage disposal for RVers, a 24-hour park attendant, a beach shower, playground, firewood and ice for sale, additional shower facilities, a large gazebo on the beach for rent, and day-use picnic areas. And those are just the basics.
You’ll find Saskatoon berries along the walkways, immediate access to the marvellous beach, and some of the most friendly staff and clean, well-run facilities you could imagine.
There are a ton of other things to enjoy in the area, from trails and swimming spots to golf courses and other recreational opportunities. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip with the family or looking for something to do in your area, a little camping trip or an afternoon at the beach will serve you well.
Floating Stone Lake and its expansive sandy beach are a well-kept secret in central Alberta, offering an enchanting escape from the ordinary. With its stunning beauty, serene atmosphere, and wide array of outdoor activities, this hidden gem deserves a place on every adventurer's bucket list. So, gear up and venture into the heart of Alberta to experience the awe-inspiring wonder of Floating Stone Lake - an undiscovered paradise awaiting your arrival.
