LETTER: Wellness centre, boutique hotel not needed in Canmore

LETTER: Let’s hope the Town of Canmore has more important priorities for our community – such as housing, water resources and wildlife – and does not amend the Municipal Development Plan and land use bylaw to allow for the development of this so-called ‘wellness facility and boutique hotel’.

On May 8, I attended a presentation on a possible new development on Crown land being leased to developers. Their project is for a wellness facility and boutique hotel located near the Canmore Nordic Centre and Rundleview neighbourhood.

Shouldn’t we thank the developers for their vision? Considering the advantages this project would offer if it came to fruition, our community might no longer need family physicians, nor to work up a sweat practicing our favourite outdoor sports. To achieve the promoters’ touted benefits of health and longevity, we would simply go to the facility and enjoy the spa, consult a naturopath, get infrared therapy and mingle with “world class” tourist visitors.

Let’s hope the Town of Canmore has more important priorities for our community – such as housing, water resources and wildlife – and does not amend the Municipal Development Plan and land use bylaw to allow for the development of this so-called ‘wellness facility and boutique hotel’.
