KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK – A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a bear on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 4) in Kootenay National Park.

Police said the deadly single-vehicle incident occurred on Highway 93 near Settlers Road, north of Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia, where two people on a motorbike crashed into a bruin on the road.

The passenger sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital.

“One person was deceased at the scene. [The driver] clipped it while trying to avoid the bear and [lost] control of the motorcycle,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, division media relations officer.

“We are continuing to investigate. There is no indication of anything criminal at this time.”

STARS air ambulance was called to the emergency scene at approximately 2:12 p.m., but was stood down.

DriveBC reported that both directions of the highway have fully re-opened.

Currently, no additional information about the deceased has been given.

Details on the type of bear or if it was killed or badly injured are not available.

The Outlook will provide updates as they come.

Kootenay National Park shares a border with Banff National Park.
