The Canadian Historical Hall of Fame has named Doug (Larry) Petherbridge of Barrhead County as its 2024 Pro Rodeo Legend inductee.
“People are nominated and, once a year, ten directors meet to choose the inductee,” explained Brenda Vold, Rodeo Hall of Fame director.
Legend status is given to outstanding cowboys who have had a notable career but did not win a Canadian championship.
Petherbridge competed in bareback riding and bull riding, two of the most demanding events in rodeo according to Gene Miller, another rodeo hall of famer.
After Petherbridge stopped competing, he stayed involved in rodeo doing some judging and sat on the board of directors according to Miller.
Many friends offered their congratulations.
“Congratulations to the most deserving! Larry is an outstanding individual, even with his quiet demeanour, he is an inspiration to many of us!” said Maureen Kushak-Young on Facebook.
Thomas R Towers commented on Facebook: “A good hand in everything he did.”
A banquet will be scheduled in the fall for the formal induction, Vold said.
The Canadian Historical Hall of Fame has different categories of inductees that you can find on their website, www.canadianprorodeohalloffame.org.
Their goal is honouring the history of rodeo by recognizing cowboys, animals and builders who have achieved excellence in their fields.
