Today, we're highlighting a hidden oasis, only a quick drive from Edmonton, waiting to be discovered.
Just a stone's throw away from the town of Boyle lies one of the province's best-kept secrets. Known for its sandy beaches, clean, swimmable water, and surrounding natural beauty, this oasis is not a distant dream but a reality waiting to be explored, whether for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
While many are familiar with Alberta's larger lakes, this long, winding lake surrounded by boreal forest offers visitors a serene, less crowded alternative that feels like a true escape. Welcome to Long Lake Provincial Park, a tranquil haven situated 20 km south of Boyle along Highway 831 in Thornhild Country.
Long Lake stretches over 12 km, with clear, inviting water surrounded by dense forests. The beach area is a crescent of soft, golden sand where you can spread out a beach blanket, relax, and soak up the summer sun. The water is refreshingly cool, perfect for a leisurely swim, floating on a float, or trying out an activity like kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. For those who prefer to stay dry, the beach is an ideal spot to set up a picnic, build sand castles, or relax with a juicy summer read.
There is more to the park than just the beach. There's a wealth of activities to keep everyone entertained. Boating enthusiasts will be delighted by the expansive waters, perfect for water sports or fishing. The lake is well-stocked with a variety of fish, including northern pike, perch, and walleye. You'll need a fishing license to try your hand at catching a bite, but it's well worth it. The park also has a boat launch, allowing easy entry in and out of the water.
Camping at Long Lake Provincial Park is excellent for families with young children. The well-maintained campground offers a range of camping sites, a general store, a concession, fully serviced washrooms, a laundromat, playgrounds, and a large grassy area. There is a boat house with canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards available for rent. Kids will spend hours playing on the sandy shores of the lake while enjoying a multitude of activities. The park is complete with a paved trail around the campground and White Earth Trail, a 17 km trail for hiking and biking.
There is a wonderful local Farmers Market held every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from May through August. Vendors sell locally sourced items such as veggies, preserves, pies, crafts, and so much more.
