The Exposure 2011 Calgary Banff Canmore Photography Festival is moving outside this week for the inaugural outdoor projection in downtown Canmore.

Exposure chair Craig Richards said the outdoor wall projection, which will occur Friday, Feb. 11, in the empty lot next to the Bow Valley Credit Union at 806 Main Street from 8-9:30 p.m. will feature 400 images taken by 75 photographers.

Amateurs and professionals were both invited to participate, and organizers also received another 200 photographs after the deadline, which unfortunately will not be part of the projection.

The goal of the projection, Richards said, was to further involve Canmore in the seventh annual photography festival that this year is promoting the theme of Where We Are: A Sense of Place.

“It brings art into the streets and in a really lovely, strong great way,” Richards said, adding it also allows a large number of photography lovers to participate directly in the festival.

As part of the outdoor projection project, photographers Andrew Querner and George Webber selected three images that they best felt represented the festival’s theme to be reproduced on large vinyl panels, courtesy of Snappy’s Sign & Graphics Emporium, that are currently hanging in the windows of the old SAAN building.

Already, Richards said, the panels have been a hit.

“When we were installing (the panels) small crowds of people were stopping,” he said.

The panels will be up for the month of February.

And the outdoor projection will go ahead, no matter what the weather, barring extreme blizzard conditions.

“Unless it’s snowing really heavy, we’re doing it” Richards said.
