It’s getting hotter all the time! With this summer’s record-setting hot temperatures, what can you do to stay comfortable in the heat?

The most important thing is to keep up with air conditioner maintenance and be sure that it is working properly at peak efficiency.  Air conditioners are complicated systems with many moving parts and pressurized refrigeration. They work from the outside to bring the outside air in, and they work constantly on the hot days and do nothing in the winter. If you do not keep up with the maintenance, the AC maintenance will not be very efficient.

One easy thing to do is to replace the filters regularly and be sure to have the system serviced before the warm season begins, or if you are concerned about the way it is operating.  There are things you can do yourself but if more is needed call professional services to help.

Make the Most Out of What You Have

Keep the air conditioners outdoor conditioner in the shade so that it can provide cooler air. If there is not a tree above it, use an awning, or something to provide shade, and be sure that there are no obstructions in any air vents, or in the way of the compressor so that the air can flow. Use a garden hose with water to keep the air compressor clean.

Keep the Home Cooler

Even though you have an air conditioner, it is no reason to get rid of your indoor fans. Keep the air circulating inside the home by using them also. Fans are great even if you don’t have an air conditioner. You can mimic an air conditioner by putting bowls of ice in front of a fan. The fan will blow air into the stack of ice and will cool where you want it.

Other ways to keep the home cool on hot days include not using the oven, or even the dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer during the hottest parts of the day. Also, keep the sun out by keeping the curtains and blinds closed.

The best way to keep cool during the heat is to keep all the systems in the home working properly. Have the unit serviced yearly, change the filter and keep it clean, and be sure there are no obstructions in front of any air vents.
