These days, costs are soaring as high as the temperatures. If you are thinking that some home renovations might help, there are some grants still available. Home renovations are important to make the home more energy efficient or more accessible. Which grants are still available?
The Canada Greener Homes Initiative
This grant was given to over half a million Canadians, provided jobs and helped those who received it save many on their energy bills. Unfortunately, this grant is no longer in place. It had been available since 2020 and was designed to help homeowners to improve energy efficiency in their homes. Many took advantage of it, and after moving into its final phase the government announced that it was no longer accepting new applications for the grants. So, what’s next? If you have already begun your retrofits with the grant, then continue with them. If you are just beginning, there are similar loan programs in place, and those just starting are encouraged to consider the Greener Homes Loan Program.
Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program
This grant, or loan, depending on circumstances, allows seniors to make home improvements that allow them to continue living independently for as long as possible. The grant covers repairs, not renovations, but loans are available to allow seniors to make adaptations to their homes to be more accessible to their needs.
Clean Energy Improvement Program
This program, a loan with long repayment terms, will make your home more energy efficient, and lower your electricity bill. It can be paid through the property bill with payments that can be transferred to the new owner if you decide to sell.
These programs are not the only options available. There are other grants, loans and rebates available provincially, or by municipality. Here is a list of all grants available with explanations of what they are and how to access them.
