KANANASKIS – A bluff charge from a grizzly bear has closed Sparrow’s Egg Lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country.

The closure came into affect on Saturday (June 6) and is until further notice.

“Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time,” states the advisory from Alberta Parks.

The lake, popular for its fishing, is located between Highway 40 and the Lower Kananaskis Lake and is only accessible by trail.

Outdoor goers are advised to take the following precautions to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear.

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray, make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.
