EXSHAW – The Exshaw fire department is reminding the public to stay off the ice on bodies of water after a report of people walking on Lac Des Arcs Tuesday afternoon (March 26).
"I think they are taking their lives in their hands. They shouldn't be doing that," Rick Lyster, Exshaw Fire Chief said on the scene.
Around approximately 3:15 p.m., Exshaw Fire received a call regarding four people walking onto the ice at the Lac Des Arcs turnoff, a popular spot for motorists to stop to stretch their legs, check out the scenery, or take photos.
Exshaw Fire and Kananaskis Public Safety attended the scene after receiving calls from concerned witnesses.
Lyster said by the time they arrived, the people reported to be on the ice had already left.
"The Conservation Officer [who] responded talked to a number of witnesses who saw the people get off the ice and get in their car and leave," the Fire Chief said.
"Everyone is safe as far as we know."
With temperatures as high as 18.6 C in Lac Des Arcs last week, emergency services took the opportunity to remind the public to remain safe and off the ice.
"Of course there is concern because it's been pretty warm lately and the ice hasn't been as strong anymore ... it's a bad time," Lyster said.
