On Aug. 12, 2024, Banffites will be creating a little bit of history. There are many issues and opinions regarding the Banff Avenue pedestrian zone, but I would ask everyone to consider what is actually happening.
How many countries would provide the opportunity for a small group of residents to voice their concerns to the degree that the government of the day would be required to hold an event to allow the population as a whole to express their opinion which would be binding on that government – without dire consequences to the group which originally started the process?
Many residents in Banff will not be able to vote, for various reasons, but that does not mean that they cannot participate in other ways. For those Canadian citizens who have the privilege, and some may say duty, to cast a ballot, it is an example of how democracy works in Banff and Canada.
Remember, your participation matters, and your vote, which is completely secret, also matters.
