LETTER: Infamous Canmore intersection remains unpopular for some residents

Editor:

When is Canmore’s mayor and council as well as Town administration going to concede the intersection beside the A&W at Bow Valley Trail and Railway Avenue/Benchlands Trail simply does not work?

The time it takes to get through it from every direction is ridiculous. There are no traffic lights across the intersection, resulting in the lead vehicle in every queue having to look up vertically from the stop line to see the relevant signal. There is only one lane straight through in each direction. The no right turn on a red light rule is ridiculous when the intersection is empty of pedestrians and cyclists.

Even on non-busy weekdays, the westbound traffic is often backed up to the Ford dealer around the traffic circle north of Spring Creek Drive. Will the constant state of congestion which also restricts first responders have to result in fatalities before the Town comes to its senses and fixes this mess?

I have personally heard the mayor acknowledge that there were many complaints while the intersection and its underground infrastructure were being rebuilt, but once it was finished, everyone thinks it’s great. Really?

I have spoken to countless other residents about this. Not one disagrees with the complaints I point out. Many deliberately take longer alternative routes simply to avoid this annoying piece of intersection design. Please remedy this mess.

Al Bellstedt,

Canmore
