There is plenty to love about the Canmore Folk Music Festival. An extremely impressive lineup of talent, a 50/50 draw, a great way to spend time with family and friends – you won’t want to miss a moment, so mark your calendar for August 5-7.
Since 1978, the Canmore Folk Music Festival has attracted up to 21,000 music fans annually from across southern Alberta, western Canada, and the northwestern USA. The festival takes place over three days in August and features 30+ individual acts, a family-friendly inclusive site, a kids' area, stages surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains, and much more. The workshop stages bring together musicians from diverse backgrounds, creating unique and unforgettable music.
This year’s impressive lineup of artists includes Serena Ryder, Allison Russell, Richard Thompson, Suzie Vinnick, The McDades and many more. Festival goers will recognize a lot of the talent and have a chance to explore up and coming bands. The Arrogant Worms, who has been making audiences laugh for more than three decades, will also take to the stage.
As a family-friendly event, there is plenty for kids to do on site. Between shows they can explore face painting, crafts, and special kid’s performances. Adults have plenty to enjoy too! A beer garden, artisan market, and food trucks ensure something for everyone.
To ensure inclusive fun for all, the organizers have a few rules and policies in place.
- Tarps, blankets, and chairs are allowed, but there are specific restrictions on size and height. On-grass seating must not cover more than 6x8 feet and chairs must not be taller than 24”. Those needing to use taller chairs can access a designated area to the rear of the stage grounds. Reserving areas by leaving tarps or chairs unattended is not permitted. There is a designated dancing area, and dancing is highly encouraged. First aid and roaming volunteers are on site at all times to ensure everyone remains safe while having a wonderful time.
The countdown to the festival is on, but there is still time for corporate sponsors and volunteers to get involved; and, any time during the year – not just on festival dates – donations are accepted to help fund the Festival and to support the Canmore Folk Artist Development Fund. This endowed fund, supported by the Edmonton Community Foundation, aims to invest in the community by providing annual grants for youth scholarships, music in schools, and artist development. It aspires to nurture the future artists who will grace stages not only at this Festival but also across the globe.
The Canmore Folk Music Festival thanks its sponsors, including title sponsor TD Canada Trust, for helping to make this annual event possible.
