Two Projects to Keep You Cool This Summer

The weather is getting warmer and hot summer days and nights are right around the corner. Don’t sweat it out this year – instead try one of these fairly simple DIY projects to help keep your home cool and comfortable.

Window Fans

Window fans are a great economical choice for keeping your home comfortable in the summer. They work by either pulling in fresh, cooler air from outside or by blowing hot air from inside out. The best window fans have settings that allow you to switch direction.  Not only do they provide some relief from the heat, but they use a lot less energy than an air conditioner.

Installing a window fan is not difficult:

1. Measure the window. Make sure you purchase a fan that will fit the size and style of your window.
2. Clean the window and sill thoroughly before installing the fan. Open the window as far as it will go and remove the screen.
3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the fan. Some fans have expandable side panels, brackets, or clips, or may require a support board. Double check that the fan is properly secured.
4. Plug the fan in and test. Some fans have a thermostat or other features that you will need to familiarize yourself with.

Portable Air Conditioner Systems

Window fans are handy and inexpensive, but air conditioners deliver the coldest air even on the hottest days. If you aren’t ready to have an air conditioner installed in your home’s HVAC system, try a much more affordable portable air conditioner system.

Installing these units is a lot like installing a window fan:

1. Choose the room you want to cool. Even though these units are portable, they take a little time to set up each time you want to move them. Choose a room with an easy window for venting and a room in which you spend a lot of time in.
2. Measure the window opening that you want to vent your air conditioner out of. You may need to purchase a different adapter kit to ensure a good seal.
3. Install the exhaust hose. Follow the directions from the portable air conditioner and/or the adapter kit to make sure that the exhaust hose is properly installed for the window style.
4. Attach the exhaust hose to the air conditioner unit.
5. Plug in the air conditioner and test. Make sure to follow the instructions for your specific unit.

Fans vs Air Conditioners

There are benefits to both fans and air conditioners. While fans don’t cool as quickly or as thoroughly as an air conditioner, they use a lot less energy, which means a lower power bill at the end of the month. Air conditioners are great for those ultra-hot days that creep past 30°C when no amount of air circulation will cool down your home. Luckily, both options are quick and easy DIY projects that will help to keep your home more comfortable.
